The Regulation desk covers the rules being written around digital assets and the enforcement actions testing them: SEC and CFTC proceedings in the United States, MiCA implementation across the European Union, licensing regimes in Asia and the Gulf, and the central-bank work on systemic stablecoins. Regulatory stories are unusually checkable, because most of them begin with a document anyone can read.

What we track on this desk

• Enforcement. Filed complaints, settlements and judgments. We link the filing wherever one exists — a complaint is an allegation, and a settlement is not a finding of fact.
• Rulemaking. Consultations, final rules and implementation deadlines, which move slowly and are frequently reported as though they were decided.
• Licensing. Which venues can serve which markets, and under what conditions.
• Legislation. Bills in progress. Introduction, committee passage and enactment are three very different things and are labelled as such.
• Supervisory policy. Central-bank and prudential rules that determine how banks may hold or service digital assets.

How to read a regulation story here

The recurring failure in this category is treating a proposal as a rule. A consultation paper, a draft bill and a commissioner’s speech all generate headlines that read like decisions, and the distance between them and enforceable law is often years. Our coverage states the stage a measure has actually reached.

Jurisdiction is the other trap. A ruling in one US district binds that district; a European regulation applies across member states but on a phased timetable. Where sources characterise the reach of a decision differently — and they routinely do — the story carries a Disputed label with both readings shown rather than a single confident summary.
