About this topic

DeFi is financial infrastructure built as smart contracts rather than as companies: lending markets, decentralised exchanges, derivatives venues and the yield strategies layered on top. Most of it runs on Ethereum and its rollups. The defining property is that positions and balances are public, which makes DeFi unusually verifiable — and unusually easy to misreport, because the raw data is available to anyone with a dashboard and a thesis.

What we track on this desk

  • Protocol launches and upgrades. New markets, governance votes and parameter changes that alter risk for depositors.
  • Exploits. Oracle manipulation, reentrancy, bridge failures and key compromise. Cause matters: a price-feed attack and a stolen key are different failures with different lessons.
  • Total value locked. Reported where useful and treated as a rough gauge, not a scoreboard — TVL moves with token prices as much as with deposits.
  • Stablecoin liquidity. Where dollars sit on-chain, which determines what can actually be traded — see the Stablecoins hub.
  • Governance. Who holds voting power and what they do with it.

How to read a DeFi story here

Exploit reporting moves fastest and ages worst. Early loss estimates are almost always wrong, often by an order of magnitude, and the attack vector named in the first hour is frequently revised. Our coverage separates what the protocol has confirmed from what analysts have inferred, and a single-source figure carries an Unproven label until other publishers report it independently.

Yield figures need the same scepticism. An advertised APY may be denominated in an emitted token whose price is falling faster than the yield accrues, which is a loss described as a return. Where sources compute yields on different bases we mark the story Disputed rather than picking the higher number.
