About this topic

The Markets desk covers price, flows and the macro conditions around them: spot and derivatives activity, ETF creations and redemptions, liquidity conditions, and the rate and inflation data that crypto has traded against more closely than most of its advocates expected. Market stories are the easiest to publish and the hardest to publish well.

What we track on this desk

  • Institutional flows. ETF creations and redemptions and corporate treasury activity — reported in filings, and therefore checkable.
  • Derivatives positioning. Funding rates, open interest and liquidation cascades, which explain far more short-term moves than narrative does.
  • Macro. Rate decisions, inflation prints and dollar strength, tracked through central-bank releases rather than commentary about them.
  • On-chain supply. Exchange balances, dormant supply and large-holder movement.
  • Liquidity structure. Order-book depth and where it actually sits, which determines how far a given order moves price.

How to read a markets story here

Attribution is the problem. Every price move attracts an explanation within minutes, and most of those explanations are constructed after the fact from whatever headline was nearest. We attribute a cause only where a source has actually reported one, and a move without a documented driver is reported as a move.

Round numbers deserve particular scepticism — a level is not support because it ends in zeros. Where analysts disagree about what drove a session, the story is marked Disputed and both readings are shown, because the disagreement is more honest information than a confident single answer would be.
